Story by Paula Jhea Sison
With the advent of technology and the fast-paced society, we can't help but think about those mornings when we just flop infront of our televisions while munching cereal or eating hotdog for breakfast. Do you still remember the schedule of shows back in the 90s or 2000s? Or those cartoons which make you sing and dance with the casts? Here are some of the shows we surely miss as 90s and 2000s kids.
1. SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?
Original Release: September 1969 - October 1970.
Although it has been almost 50 years since the first Scooby-doo episode was aired, it is still remembered by most 90s and 2000s kids as reruns, reboots, and revivals were created. The adventures of Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma, and the great dane, Scooby-doo, revolve around solving supernatural mysteries. However, at the end of each episode, it is always revealed that the supernatural occurrences are brought not by ghosts but by people. This show has taught us that friendship is important in survival and that we are valuable despite our differences.
2. BARNEY AND FRIENDS
Original Release: April 1992 - September 2009.
This is another classical television series which revolves around four dinosaurs namely Barney (purple T-rex), Baby Bop (green triceratops), B.J. (yellow Protoceratops), and Riff (orange Hadrosaur). Barney and Friends is a children-oriented educational show that imparts lessons through singing and dancing. It also teaches values and manners to children. One of the most remarkable parts of watching Barney and Friends is singing its closing song, “I Love You”.
3. ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE
Original Release: September 1993 - November 1996
We used to watch Rocko’s Modern Life when we were kids but we didn’t realize back that this animated sitcom will describe our lives right now. From Rocko’s journey to the real world to his struggles in surviving his everyday life make us see our 2019 selves in him. Aside from that, Rocko’s Modern Life shows us how optimism plays a big role in surviving adulthood.
4. SINESKWELA
Original Release: June 1994 - 2004
Do you remember when your elementary school teacher used to make you watch Sine Eskwela every afternoon? Sineskwela is one of the few local children shows which aims to introduce the principles of science through creative visualization. Although the cinematic effects are not as grand as today, I’m sure that we were all amazed by how Ate Winnie, Ugat Puno, Kuya Bok, Kulitsap, Palikpik, Anatom, and Agatom explained topics like water cycle, blood flow, and the solar system. Also, who wouldn’t be able to sing the legendary soundtrack line, “Tayo na sa Sineskwela, Tuklasin natin ang siyensya. Buksan ang
pag-iisip, Tayo’y likas na scientist”.
5. EPOL APPLE
Original Release: 1994-2004
Epol Apple is one of those children-oriented shows which taught us english proficiency when we were kids. Luis and Porfirio’s adventure to teach children the basic rules in English language such as vocabulary and grammar through stories and songs made the kids love them. However, the show did not focus on the English language alone. The characters also introduced Filipino grammar rules and vocabulary to children. Epol Apple motivated elementary school children to love reading and at the same time, enhanced their writing proficiency.
6. TOTALLY SPIES
Original Release: November 2001 - October 2013
Totally Spies is a classic favorite of 90s and 2000s kids. Totally Spies depicts three teenage high school girls in Beverly Hills who are also undercover agents of World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP). Girl power is the general theme of this animated show. Who says girls cannot save the world while dealing with teenage dramas? I’m pretty sure Sam, Alex, and Clover became the roles models of 90s and 2000s kids at some point in their lives.
7. CODE NAME: KIDS NEXT DOOR
Original Release: December 2002 - January 2008
Code Name: Kids Next Door is a cartoon that will make you want to be a child again. The kids next door may be living in early 2000s but their tree house is probably built in the future with its state of the art technology that helps Nigel (Numbuh One), Hoagie (Numbuh Two), Kuki (Numbuh Three), Wally (Numbuh Four), and Abby (Numbuh Five) fight social injustices. Their last episode was one of the most heartbreaking episodes in the whole series with Nigel asking them to remain kids at heart as they shout
their last “Kids next door!”
8. MAHIWAGANG BAUL
Original Release: July 2005 - January 2007
Mahiwagang Baul is GMA 7’s counterpart to ABS-CBN’s Wansapanataym. This Sunday afternoon show is about the adventures of the siblings, Epoy and Jewel, everytime they visit their Lola Tacia’s house. Here, they enter a treasure chest that brings them to a magical world where they personally experience Philippine myth and folklore. Life lessons are also learned at the end of each episodes which makes it more suitable to children.
9. HANNAH MONTANA
Original Release: March 2006 - January 2011
Who doesn’t miss having the best of both world? Growing up with Hannah Montana, we watched how Miley Stewart balanced her double life as a schoolgirl and as a recording artist through her Hannah Montana persona. Miley Stewart’s relatable teenage dilemmas, adventures (and misadventures), deep friendship with Lily and Oliver, and her love for her brother Jackson and father Robby made us admire her even more. At the same time, listening to Hannah Montana songs such as Best of Both Worlds, Nobody’s Perfect, and It’s All Right here is enough to take us back to time.
10. iCARLY
Original Release: September 2007 - November 2012
Carly Shaw probably invented vlogging through her web show, iCarly. This show features the lives of teenagers Carly Shaw, Sam Puckett, and Freddie Benson in the late 2000s who are still discovering how to survive their adolescent lives. iCARLY also taught us the importance of friendship through Carly, Sam, and Freddie who catch each other’s backs during tough times.
These are only ten of those shows we used to watch as kids. I'm sure that most of these shows still have a special place in our hearts that even time cannot erase. These shows defined our childhood but of course, even as old as we are right now, we still want to watch these shows again. Good news for us, some episodes of these shows are available on Netflix or Youtube.
