Remakes of classic films for the new generation

Updated: Apr 24, 2019

Story by Maria Catherine Garcia

OG is way better than a copycat. Well, that is what most people think when we hear that an old film is having a remake. But, whether or not it is a remake or just plain déjà vu, it is undeniably true that most of us love to watch these films because it reminds us of the good old days.

Despite having different generations passed, classic shows never fail to get the love of the audience, that no matter how many times a film gets a remake, as long as it holds the same feeling and charisma it gave to the audience before, they tend to garner a positive review from the viewers.

This does not only happen to foreign films as some of our own Pinoy films have gotten remakes. There are a lot of Filipino films and shows that have had remakes, but we usually do not know them either because we weren’t born yet when it was aired, or we just do not remember.

Some of the reasons why we have remakes of our old beloved films are because

some filmmakers, producers or directors believed that they could make a better version of the film. Others just simply want to share to the younger generations the memories they have with the film by showing it again, but changing the characters and settings based on the preferred taste of the young ones. There are also some who just wants to prolong the hold of their copyright in the film.

For you to be able to feel the nostalgia and thrill of the past, listed below are some of

the classic old films that have a remake.

On top of the list is Ang Probinsyano that was originally played by Fernando Poe Jr. in

1997. It was a box office hit movie that later on got a sequel entitled Ang Pagbabalik ng

Probinsyano in 1998.

This movie got its remake on 2015, where it was changed into a teleserye, which was being starred by Coco Martin. And since it’s launch on 2015, Ang Probinsyano teleserye is still running for almost 3 years now.

Second in line is Encantadia, a drama-fantasy series that aired on 2005, starring Iza

Calsado, Diana Zubiri, Sunshine Dizon and Karylle which were called “Sang’gre”.

And on 2016, the remake of this hit fantasy-serye was showed to the public starring the new sang’gre’s Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, Sanya Lopez, and Glaiza de Castro.

Next in this list is Darna. Darna started off as a movie on 1951 and was first played by the “Queen of Philippine Movies” Ms. Rosa Del Rosario. But this is only the beginning, because if you guys do not know, well Darna has undergone many remakes already. Aside from Ms. Rosa, there are 10 more other women in the Filipino entertainment industry who have played the role of Darna. Liza Moreno 1963 and 1964, Eva Montes 1963 and 1964, Gina Pareño 1969, Vilma Santos 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1980, Lorna Tolentino 1977, Rio Locsin 1979, Nanette Medved 1991, Anjanette Abayari 1994, Angel Locsin in 2005 and the most recent Darna so far, Marian Rivera in the year 2009. Although there was a recent announcement about the planned remake of Darna, there are still questions about who will play the role of the new Darna, since the actress Liza Soberano let go of it.

We also have on the list the movie Kampanerang Kuba, that was originally played by

Vilma Santos in 1973.

And on the year 2005, it launched its drama serye starring Anne Curtis. There’s also the Bituing Walang Ningning, a classic movie starring Cherie Gil and Sharon Cuneta. The movie was turned into a teleserye in the year 2006, where the leading actresses are Sarah Geronimo and Angelika Dela Cruz.
