Across the country, you’ll find people speaking different kinds of languages. This is also because of our diverse cultures. Filipino may be our national language, but there are more languages used in the Philippines.
Nowadays, our current generation also developed a new kind of lingo. We now use slang words and acronyms, so let’s dive in and learn more about our slangs made by us Gen-Zs. Already fluent? Let’s see if you recognize all in the list.
IDK
IDK stands for: I don’t know. IDK is one of the popular abbreviations used in the internet. Whether you don’t have any information on a particular topic, or you just don’t care, IDK is the abbreviation that expresses your uncertainty in the quickest way.
Example: “Hey, do we have classes tomorrow?” “IDK.”
Tea
This is not your favorite kind of beverage. The Gen-Zs' meaning of tea is hearsay. It came from the phrase ‘Spill the tea’, used when someone is asking for some juicy rumor or gossip.
Example: “Sis, spill the tea!”
On fleek
The words ‘on fleek’ can mostly be found in make-up vlogs and tutorials. On fleek refers on how something is perfectly executed and is commonly used to describe one’s appearance or fashion style.
Example: “Her eyebrows are on fleek.”
Woke
Woke is a political term, used as an alert to the injustices inside a society. It is a literal translation of the Filipino word mulat, or being able to see.
Example: “We need to stay angry and stay woke.”
Shady
Shady describes something as suspicious or questionable. When a person is acting shady, their real emotions or motives are unclear.
Example: “There are some shady going-ons in his life.”
Squad
Squad refers to a group, a team, a gang or a barkada. A squad consists of people whom you consider as close friends.
Example: “Bye, my squad is waiting for me.”
SKL
SKL stands for: Share ko lang. This phrase is used if you want to share something that happened to you, or something that you did.
Example: “I went to the bar last night, skl.”
AFAIK
AFAIK is an acronym for As Far As I Know. It is used to convey uncertainty when answering a question.
Example: “Afaik, the answer for problem #2 is 24.”
Legit
Coming from the word legitimate, legit stands for something that is legal, proper, or done in conformance with the rules. It can also mean “true”.
Example: “Is that legit?”
Stan
If you have someone you idolize, or a fan of a particular celebrity, I bet you have heard this word more than once. The word slang is used when you are a fan of someone or something.
Example: “I’m an Army, and I stan BTS.”
Ship
No, this is not a water vehicle. In our generation, when someone says, “I ship them” it means that someone supports a romantic relationship between two individuals, may it be fictional or non fictional.
Example: “I’m shipping my sister with my friend.”
TFTI
TFTI stands for Thanks For The Information. It is used when you want to quickly express gratitude for what you have heard.
Example: “Hey, I heard that your sister is going out with your friend!” “Ohhh!! TFTI!”
TBH
TBH means To Be Honest, and is used when you are going to admit something and say what you honestly feel.
Example: “TBH, I don’t know how to properly explain this theory.”
GG
Good Game, or Gotta Go, is mostly used inside the gaming realm. It is used after playing a multiplayer game and/or saying goodbye to your online friends before going offline.
Example: “We won!” “Yeah, GG.”
Ghosted
Now, this is a slang that just recently sprung up. Ghosted is when a person, usually a romantic partner, suddenly vanished and left you without a proper break up goodbye.
Example: “You were ghosted by that horrible man!”
